How to: The Navajo Skirt

Hey guys! I’m Merrick from Merrick’s Art, where I blog about sewing, refashioning, style, and everyday life. I’m so excited to be here today and show you a really fun and simple DIY project!
A few months ago, I was reading Kendi’s blog, and saw this amazing coat from Anthropologie. I loved the navajo inspired hemline detail, and instantly wanted it. But rather than spending a fortune on another coat that I don’t really need, I decided to copy it in skirt form.
** you do not need artistic skills to do this project. With a ruler, everyone can draw a straight line, and I’m pretty sure everyone can draw at least one good triangle, even if you have to practice a few times 🙂
Materials needed:
  • plain colored item of clothing
  • white (matte) fabric paint
  • sponge brush
  • freezer paper
  • pen & ruler
  • iron/ironing board
Step 1. Cut a three-inch wide strip of freezer paper, and with a pen and ruler, draw two straight lines about 1/4″ apart, as seen below.  Make sure to draw on the matte side, not the shiny side.
Step 2. draw 1″ tall arrows along your line, keeping them as similar in size to each other as possible. If it makes it easier, draw one, cut it out, and use it as a template for the rest. Once you’ve drawn the entire stencil, cut it out, leaving the ends uncut (as seen below on the left).
Step 3. Using medium-high heat, iron your freezer paper into place. Check to make sure all the corners and edges of the arrows are securely attached.

Step 4.  Slide a towel or piece of cardboard inside your skirt to protect it from bleeding, then paint along the stencil.
when paint is dry, carefully peel away your stencil.
Step 5. Repeat steps 1-4 (cutting out a different arrow pattern) for your second row. If desired, repeat steps again for a third row.
Step 6. Using the same two stencils, paint the pattern on the back of the skirt, making sure to line up the sides. (The stencils will still adhere perfectly, despite being already used, and the paint on the stencil will not transfer to your iron). Wait at least 3 days to wash, and then wash inside out.
And that’s it!
Tomorrow I’ll show you how to make this pink skirt so you have a fun new skirt to paint! Head on over to my blog tomorrow and check it out!
Thanks again for having me, Abby! Happy painting!

  1. Not a Navajo design. I'm Navajo, This is like calling something Italian when it's clearly Swedish folk art patterns. Please, if you reference our culture do it right!
