Washing Your Hair

Is it good to wash your hair every day? Find out from Twist Me Pretty.
We need to have a little chat.  I’ve heard you’re still washing your hair every day.  I know, I know – you work out all the time and your hair gets sweaty.  Mine does too.  It gets especially gross over my forehead and under my neck.  Sopping wet I tell ya!  Just pull it up after your workout and take a nice steamy shower.  When you get out your hair will be a real mess.  Don’t worry. Your hair should be wet from your workout and again from the steamy shower.  Not wet wet, just damp-ish.

Softly brush it out and blow it dry.  Wet your bangs and then go ahead and style them like normal.  Is that so super gross?  Sweat is made almost completely out of water.  And I’m pretty dang sure the sweat from your face doesn’t smell.  If it does… you should probably see somebody… You just think it’s gross cause it’s called sweat.  It’s a mental thing.  Don’t worry, we all have our issues haha, just teasing.  After your steamy shower your hair won’t feel gross I promise. Remember our no washing schedule?
Day one – wash it and wear it down.
Day two – wear it half up.
Day three – wear it either half up again or put it in some sort of ponytail.
Day four– if you must, wash.  If your feeling really crazy, you could go another few days!

My hair is used to a good 5-6 days without washing.  Start out slow.  Wash your hair today and not tomorrow.  Do that for a few weeks.  Let your hair get used to your natural oils.  They are your friieeeendd!  We looove our natural oils.  They make our hair healthy and silky.  Invest in some dry shampoo to get you through those days it’s feeling pretty dirty.  I promise if you train your hair it will start producing less oil.  It’s a supply and demand thing.  If you’re stripping it of its natural oils every day, it’s going to keep producing them.

If I hear that you’re still washing your hair every day I am going to be SOOOO mad at you!  It’s okay though friend, I will still love you.

  1. I wash my hair everyday. I know that’s supposed to be bad. I started using the Shielo Hydrate Shampoo, my hair looks and feels so healthy. I barely need to use any shampoo, a quarter-size only, and I have a ton of hair. Typically I’ve had to rinse and repeat , but with Shielo – I use just the quarter-size and its perfect. Feels soooo good and its super hydrating.

I would recommend this to any gal with thick hair prone to getting dry.

  2. I just got introduced during the Conference for Mom’s. I am washing every 3-4 days now and I can’t even explain how this has changed my morning routine from 2 hrs down to 45 min today!!!!! And I feel beautiful! I wake up and my hair looks good!

I’m selfishly so glad that Abby is getting her hair cut today! I have shorter hair and would love to see a book of styles for my hair length! Thank you, thank you!

    1. Yay!! I’m so happy you’re washing your hair less- it’s the best. I’m excited for the new styles, we’ll see if I can do it haha!

  3. See i have practice every single day of the week and i feel like i have to shower! The thing with my hair (it might sound gross) but i have a oily scalp, dry brittle hair, and dandruff. Half of the reason is i flat iron my hair or curl it almost every single day! (the reason for that is i have mid length hair and i don't know what else to do with it). I NEED HELP!

  4. I love this post! I am a 22 year old mom of a 1 year old and a 3 year old, and I work full time as well. I wash my hair about every 4 days. When I was younger I just did it out of laziness, and I thought I was gross haha. But now I do it out of necessity. I’ve only recently found out it’s good for your hair, and that makes me feel great! I have short bangs, dark thin super fine hair, and an oily forehead, so my hair gets oily very quickly. Dry shampoo is my best friend and it works wonders. At this point with the little ones in tow, I don’t even care if my hair wasn’t used to it and was a greasy nasty mess, there is no way I’m washing my hair more than twice a week! Haha! I really love your blog and I relate to a lot of your posts. Keep it up! You seem like a great mom and a great person. <3 Bri

  5. I used to wash my hair every other day…and the second day it was SO greasy…like nothing but a pony would fly. Then I stumbled upon your blog about 8 months ago (?) and worked up to where now I’ve gone 6 (yes, 6!!) days between washings…usually 4 or 5 days tho. I do use Suave’s dry shampoo (I like it better that Batiste, and it’s a TON cheaper) somewhere around day 3 and it keeps the oil down for the remainder of the days. My husband LOVES that I don’t spend so much time on my hair too! Not grossed out at all, and neither am I. Thank you!!

  6. I am one of the reluctant ones on the hole not washing hair thing. I have curly hair and if I do not wash it. It will not behave at All. If you have a though about us curly girls lets her it. Thanks for all the great hair dos.

  7. Great post! I have a question though, what do you do if you get dandruff on the second or third day? I tend to get dandruff if I don’t wash my hair every other day. Also, for brunettes, I use a mixture of cocoa powder and corn starch as a dry shampoo because baby powder and the spray ones leave a white residue. It works GREAT and I smell like cookies! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Thank you for this post. This is a topic that my friends and I have discussed a lot lately. We were talking about it today and actually have a couple of questions. It seems like it is a common question that others are asking on her too. At what point do you use the baby powder/dry shampoo. Which day(s) do you use it and when do you apply it? (before or after you shower?) Any more details you can give would be great!! Thank you!!

    1. Hi Diane! So I don’t use the baby powder until my fourth or fifth day because it’s usually not greasy looking until then. The baby powder will not prevent grease. It just soaks it up. So dry your hair all the way and then if it looks greasy put a little baby powder in your hands and finger it through the roots. You do not need the baby powder unless your hair is greasy and you should apply it when your hair is completely dry. You don’t need much either! Let me know if this helps and ask any more questions! I’m going to get some dry shampoo this week so I can start answering people’s questions about that. I’ve heard really great things about it and it’s a spray so it just might be worth the investment!

  9. do you use baby powder after blow drying? because i take a shower every day, but would like to decrease washing my hair to every other. So if my hair is wet, do I blow dry it before putting baby powder in it?

  10. I would love to really commit to this so my hair would be healthier and stronger but if I go more than 2 days really without washing my hair my entire scalp itches like crazy! Do you have any tips for that? As soon as I wash my hair it stops itching.

    1. hmmm… try adding a little tea tree oil to your conditioner. My scalp will start itching after I use the baby powder. That’s usually the last day though so I just tough it out!! You can even buy shampoos with tea tree oil I believe. See how that helps

  11. I’ve been following your advice for a couple months and it’s definitely paying off. I can go every other day now and hopefully I’ll reduce more at some point. My hair feels great!

  12. Ok stupid question, but when you’re not washing your hair, do you still shower? How often? And what do you do with your hair when you’re showering but not shampooing? Just rinse it?

    1. So I shower and wash my body every day. And when I’m not washing my hair it’s up in a clip. It doesn’t get wet at all. EXCEPT from the steam in the shower. And when I get out of the shower I immediately blow it 100% dry with the blow dryer! That will release any kinks I got in the shower while it was clipped up!

  13. You are right not to wash your hair everyday and I’m happy to have tips! I wash my hair every few days. But, I always get confused when people say they don’t wash their hair everday, do they get it wet and then style it as normal or just not get it wet. I do work out most days and have baby fine hair, quite a bit of it, but still baby fine and blonde and if it is air dried it it a pretty kind of wavy. As soon as my hair has been up it gets a crease-no matter the hair tie and when I sleep it gets very flat and not pretty. Therefore, I usually get my hair wet, put a little conditioner on it, then air dry it or maybe blow dry it. So I’m not actually washing it with shampoo-does that count as not washing my hair and is it still good for it??? I actually wash my hair with shampoo about 2 or 3 times a week. Curling irons help me wait a few days! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hey Laura! So when I say I don’t wash my hair, I mean I don’t get it wet at all. And I get creases too! Just take your shower like normal with your hair up. When you get out of the shower it’ll be a disaster. But it’ll also be a little damp from the steam in the shower. Get out of the shower and immediately brush it and blow it 100% dry. The crimps should release. I’m not sure if it counts or not ha ha! Are you rinsing the oils out of your hair? If you are… it doesn’t count! Keep trying though!!

  14. I can go 5 or 6 days without washing my hair, but I wash just my bangs almost everyday. My friends make fun of me, but it is the best trick ever!

  15. These are really good advices for people who wash their hair too much ๐Ÿ™‚ I myself canยดt go too many days without washing my hair tho, I got superthin and fine hair so it just donยดt work for me, I look like a wet kitty:) But if I prep it good with dry shampoo and tease it a bit before I go to bed etc it can last for some days. Itยดs good because then I save a few extra minutes in the morning^^

  16. That dry shampoo ROCKS. And it smells good so you don’t have that oily smell. And it adds volume, I swear! I find that my hair styles so much better if I haven’t just washed it. For real.

  17. I have been thinking about this lately and this is exactly what I needed to hear! I love working out but I hate feeling like I need to wash my hair after I work out because it takes so long to dry and sometimes I don’t have time to shower, and then dry and style my hair. So as goofy as it may be that often stops me from working out. I am definitely going to do this! I just wasn’t sure how before but now I know. Thanks!!

  18. Haha! I LOVE this! I’m a hairstylist and I used to tell my clients this all the time (used to because I’m really a SAHM mom now, doing hair on the side, when I’m not running around after my kiddos).

  19. I am all about washing my hair every three to four days. Its awesome and way faster to shower and get ready! But I have course hair so it does not get oily easily. Nice for me. Love ya girlie I am excited to be reading blogs again. Im done student teaching lets hang out soon. Do you have a place to live in Utah County yet?

  20. I usually wash my hair twice a week…I keep it under the rug though. Everyone thinks I’m gross haha. But I totally use the shower steam trick. It really works! Good to know someone’s got my back on this. ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Thanks for the motivation to wash my hair less. I started going every other day about 2 months ago–this from every.single.day. with super-oily hair. I love washing it less! I’m working up the courage to go every 2 days…baby steps, right?! ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. This makes me feel so much better for only washing my hair a couple times a week! haha It used to be just out of laziness, but once I found out it was bad to wash it every day, I figured I was doing something awesome without even knowing it! And how often does that happen? Not very. lol Thanks for the post!

  23. Preach it sister! I’ve always washed my hair once to twice a week (if it’s super full of product from a style) and it makes such a difference in how long it takes me to get ready in the morning, and I’ve always had super healthy hair! (every hairdresser I have ever told my wash cycle to tells me to keep it up!)

I can even get a couple of extra days out of braids or buns if I need to!

  24. Oh my gosh, this is sooo hard for me. I wash my hair every other day. It is super oily — super super super, but I just invested in some baby powder for my hair and I am going to put it to work! I will try!!!! (eeek)
