Let's chat about diaper bags

Can we just chat about diaper bags for a second?  I am very particular about my diaper bags.  I’ve had a few and know exactly what I want out of one.  I was a little more opinionated with a bags features when my kids were babies but I feel you should invest in a bag that can grow up with your kids.  I remember being a new mom and researching for hours, reading every review that was ever posted on hundreds of the best-selling bags.  Even with all the research I still had so many questions.  In the end it boiled down to the fact that one, I’d never had a baby before and I didn’t know what features I was even supposed to be looking for.  And two, I had no idea what a good bag was worth.  Do you invest?  Do you buy a new one with each kid?  Who knows?!

I’m going to quickly go over the features I look for in a diaper bag:

1- It needs to have enough space for all my crap, because let’s be honest.  When you have a baby you’ve just got tons of it.  And it needs to go with you everywhere!
2- It needs to have a large opening that’s easily accessible.  The worst is when you’re trying to get into your diaper bag and the opening just isn’t large enough for you to dig around and find what you’re looking for.
3- The inside needs to either be removable or you need to be able to throw it in the wash.  Along with babies com messes, spilled drinks and sticky pb&j’s.
4- The bag needs to be stylish.  It needs to be gender neutral and your husband needs to feel confident taking it out.  And let’s be honest, ain’t nobody got time to switch from “mom” bag to “date night” bag.  My old diaper bag was just a diaper bag.  It looked like a diaper bag and there was no way I’d take it out of the house unless I was toting my kids along with it.  Can I tell you how many times I lost my credit cards and wallet from switching bags every couple of days?  Honestly it was bad!  So you want, ahem, I want a bag that can be worn with everything.  I’ve tried the alternative and it just wasn’t for me.  I want to have the flexibility to wear my bag with the babies, with high heels, with the husband.  I want a bag that will work everywhere and for every occasion.
5- It needs to have some sort of organizers.  I really love having outside sippy cup/bottle holder pockets but it’s not a deal breaker for me.  Not having any organizing pockets though?  Deal breaker.  If it’s just one wide open bag things will go to your diaper bag to die.  Like fishy crackers and small toy cars.  It’s okay, don’t blame yourself, it’s just part of motherhood
6- It needs to hold up and the strap needs to be strong.  There are so many times my diaper bag weighs more than my 3 year old.  Not even kidding.  And who even knows how it’s possible, but I swear it happens.
7- It needs to be affordable in the sense that I’m not buying a new house, but I’ve also come to realize that buying one expensive diaper bag is much cheaper than buying five cheaper ones.  So for me, I’m willing to make an investment if I think the product is going to hold up to it’s claims.
Let me introduce you to the Madeline Diaper Bag from Lily-Jade.

Isn’t she beautiful?  I absolutely love that she turns into a backpack, can be worn as a purse and then as a cross-body bag.  Have you ever had a real leather purse before?  Me either.  And let me tell you, it’s nothing short of freaking amazing.  Seriously I could just smell that thing all day long.  Her opening is super large so you can do all the digging you need to and in case you’re too lazy to zip- don’t lie to yourself- you can just flip that little pocket over the zipper and it’ll close her up just fine.  She’s also lined with premium canvas so clean up is a breeze.

The Madeline bag also comes with a detachable, washable canvas inner ‘baby bag’ and washable red changing pad.  Okay let me tell you why this is so amazing to me.  You’ve got your diaper bag all organized and you are just feeling awesome.  Then your husband calls and says, hey babe I just got us a sitter and we’re heading out on a hot date tonight.  Well crap.  I just organized my bag.  Haha, just go with me.  So instead of having to dump out the entire diaper bag and fill it with popcorn and drinks… or… uh… whatever else you take on your hot date, you just simply remove the canvas inner and your diaper bag has transformed into a regular purse.  Do you drop your kid off at daycare?  Just give the daycare provider the inner ‘baby bag’ and you leave with your gorgeous purse.

The purse is awesome.  It fits everything.  It organizes everything.  It’s a cross-body bag, it’s a purse, it’s a backpack.  It’s gender neutral, it looks nice and because it’s made out of premium leather you know it’s going to hold up and look great for years to come.  This is a bag that is going to grow with you.  When you no longer have babies, you can take out the ‘baby bag’ and use it to carry coloring books and sandwiches or laptops and makeup bags.

Right now the Madeline bag is $315.  Four years ago I think I would have passed on this bag simply because I just didn’t understand the worth of a great diaper bag.  You’ve got to look at them as an investment.  And if there was any bag I were going to invest in, it’d be this one.  I’ve been so happy with it.  SO WIVES.  If you have been searching high and low for a great diaper bag, please show this post to your husband and maybe, just maybe he’ll surprise you with one for Christmas!
