Shared Boy and Girl Room

This room has been done for a good two years now, say whaaat?  Yeah, we don’t even live in that house anymore!  I was finishing it up when I was pregnant with the twins, had taken pictures and was wrapping up a few things before posting and then bam, the twins were born.  And the rest is history.  It was piled up in my drafts and I never got around to publishing it.  Until today.  Are you excited?  Be excited.  Okay but not too excited because it’s kind of old news… umm… let’s just move on haha!

Welcome to Boston and Savys room!!

This room was so challenging for me because I wanted each of them to have their own space that they loved.  That meant super girlie + bright pinks and ruffles for Savy and that meant Star Wars and boy colors for Boston.  However, it’s so hard to blend those two different ideas!  So I spent hours and hours scouring pinterest and DIYing curtains and dressers and figuring out gallery walls just trying to make the room perfect for two very different people.  It was definitely a labor of love but it turned out to be one of my favorite rooms in the house!!  I don’t feel like it’s complete yet, maybe that’s why I subconsciously held off on posting it?  I feel like that’s how interior design works though… spaces evolve and change and there’s always something more you can add.  And at some point you just have to call it good and move on!  So.  Before these babies grow up and have rooms of their own, I figured it was finally time.

These pictures and products are years old now, but a lot of them are still available and I’ve taken the time to link it all up in case you wanna know where you can find some of the items too!!

All the frames are from Target or Home Goods.  I was going to get the Ikea frames but I had purchased some for my bedroom and they are SO cheap!  They aren’t square, they don’t lay flat and they’re super hard to hang.  I love the Target ones, well worth the investment.

I hope they call me on a mission print: c/o Aimee Ferre’s Shop

Rocking chair: Knock off from Amazon here, rug and pillow from Ikea and doll from Candy Kirby Designs.  She’s literally the cutes little doll ever, you need to get one or ten for your daughter!

Pillows: Similar pink shamHello Pillow,  | Pink Duvet Cover: similar here and here | Quilts: similar here.  I also love this one here, here and here. | Comforter: my favorite is from Amazon here

I’m obsessed with these styled beds here here and here!

For the DIY, no sew roman shade — awww man, this was sure a learning project for me.  What I learned?  To never DIY curtains ever again ha ha!!  Just kidding.  But I did learn just about everything NOT to do with roman shades!  I followed a tutorial similar to this one here or here, I can’t seem to find the actual one I followed but they’re honestly all over the place.  It was actually really easy to do and it would have worked if I had used the right fabric.  The glue held great, it was easy to instal, fun to cut the pull string and I was so hopeful it was going to be my first DIY project that didn’t turn out to be a complete disaster…  but then that would be just too easy!   There are always snags in my DIY projects.  Which is why I’m not a DIY blogger ?! My fabric ended up being too heavy + I had added some blackout material behind it so it was just too heavy to actually work.  If you’re going to do this, make sure you keep your fabric light!  The reason why it has that pretty arch at the bottom is because the frame snapped from the weight and it’s just sagging.  I ended up getting a roller shade put behind the curtains and used that to block out light in the mornings, so we just never operated the roman shade which was a bummer.  Even though it didn’t work, it sure was pretty right?!  We sold these curtains with the house (lucky them haha!!) so I’ve gotta figure out something for their new space.  Do I try it again? ? ?

I felt like the green pattern really tied the room together though. I hung the curtains at least a foot above the top of the window and a good six inches past each side.  It made the room look so much bigger too!  I got the pattern from some fabric store online but it’s been so long I can’t remember!  It’s a fairly popular pattern, just google green ikat fabric?

Shelves from Ikea and basket from Target.  Some of our favorite books: Jilly Bean and the One Good Thing, STUCK, One Little Match, No, David!, Rufus goes to school, Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site and obviously the little critter books!

Brooklyn Iron Bed Frame is from Overstock

Star Wars Pillow Case, I didn’t get the sheet set because it was out of our budget at the time but I LOVED the star wars pattern and wanted to incorporate it somehow.  The standard sham did the trick!  They no longer sell the Darth Vader Pillow – it’s a shame cause it’s so so cute!  But they do have a cool Kylo Ren one or cute BB8.  Similar Orange Sham.  Similar grey striped duvet cover here and here.  And I’m dying over this one here!

^ Notice the gallery wall?!  I was still working on their room when we had our family pictures taken after the twins were born.  Our photographer snagged this while we were working with the babies.  I just love these two so much! || Twin Nursery reveal here

Felt Garland: c/o Hello Maypole.  I felt like the garland and the curtains were the two main things that tied their sides together!

Their nightstand/dresser is the rast from ikea.  We painted it white and added these knobs here.  The lamp is an old spray painted one we’ve had for years, and all the accessories are from Ikea.  Except Bob, he’s Boston’s glasses holder.  We love little bob!

Be Strong Canvas: c/o Lindsay Letters.

This is MY FAVORITE canvas in the whole wide world!!!  Be Brave, Strong & Courageous.  Seek Adventure and Truth.  If you aren’t following Lindsay Letters you are missing out!!!  She has the prettiest printables and graphics and I adore all her projects, make sure to check her out!  Anyway, I tried styling the dresser about a million different ways and even considered changing the hardware.  Which btw was my dads as a little boy so it’s over 60 years old!  I just could never get the look that I was wanting. Styling dressers and shelves are no joke you guys!  So this is how it ended up.  If you have any suggestions on how I could vamp it up let me know in the comments!

There ya have it!  Their new room in our new house is a loft so the ceiling is a little bit strange and despite the massive window it doesn’t seem to get as much light.  We have any empty room across the hall and the idea was to split them up but they were so upset at the idea of being split up.  So we’re just waiting until they’re ready to have their own space and honestly, I think it’s adorable they want to stay together!

Do you have a boy and girl that share a room?  How did you decorate their space?  It’s so hard to please everyone huh?!

  1. Aww so lovely. I used to share room with my brother till end of school. It was fun because both of us could sneak out and watch tennis/cricket on the tv, while one of us could keep an eye for the parents or generally laugh our head off over silly issues.
