Products I Love

***UPDATED 12/11***

So I thought I’d share with you all the products I use.  Some of them are an absolute MUST!  And you could say that I baby my hair… mostly because I have to bleach it every three to four months.  And you blondes out there know how dry your hair can get after bleaching it, and then blow drying and flat ironing and curling it ALL the time.  Gol.  Just even thinking about doing all those things without my products make my hair hurt!

So here’s the routine.  I wash my hair every four-ish days… I know I know!!  My husband is always like, “That’s so disgusting, you really need to shower” and then I’m like, “Bri, I totally showered – just didn’t wash my hair”.  And then he says something like, “Gross” or “That can’t be good for you”!  Over the years though, he has just accepted the fact that his wife doesn’t wash her hair…  But if I had to wash my hair every day, it would seriously fall out!  Some of you are thinking, “I could never do that, my hair is so oily”.  Now I’m no expert, but I do know that when you wash your hair every day, you are stripping it of its natural oils, the oils that are good for it! If you start washing it less, and less, it will become less and less greasy.  I can seriously go almost a whole week without it becoming too disgusting!  🙂  And it’s because I’ve trained it!!! Ha ha, like a pet!

I use the Redkin All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner.  Mostly because I break out with every thing else!  I do love it though.

Then, I put these next two products in while it’s still wet:

Bed Head Small Talk Blah Blah Blah! It does just about everything.  It’s a thickifier and volumizer and it smells really yummy!
Bed Head Small Talk Blah Blah Blah is Abby's favourite

The next product is the Redkin Anti-snap, which I use maybe every other wash.  It’s got a lot of awesome proteins in it that strengthen your hair.

Then I blow it dry and use the Hanna Shield, which, is the MUST product.  I would take this and leave all the rest behind if I had to.  This product makes your hair silky.  It protects it from heat and it smooths your hair, just making it AMAZING!!  I found this stuff when Misikko {where you buy the hanna shield} sent me a trial bottle with my straightener.  I never went back.  It’s a little pricey but it’s lasted me over a year already and I still have a bunch left.  Amazing stuff.

Misikko's Hanna Shield will make your hair healthy
And then there’s the straightener, which I leave on every single day because I can’t ever remember to turn it off!!!  It’s been awesome.  It’s a 1″ and the plates are extra long which is so helpful.  I use to swear by Chi’s.  I’m telling you, it was a gamble to buy this when I loved my Chi so much.  But I will NEVER go back.  There’s just something magical about it!  This one in the picture isn’t the exact one I own, I believe it’s the newer beefier version they just came out it.  It’s called the Babybliss Nano though, in case you were wondering!

Babybliss Nano is a great iron!

Next on the list are BOBBY PINS!!  You must have nice bobby pins or they will fold over themselves.  And that just can’t happen!  So, you find these babies at Sally’s Beauty Supply.  You can get a huuuge pack for like $4.00.  Don’t ever spend money on those Walmart ones!  They are expensive and they don’t work!!

Quality bobby pins are essential for keeping your hair in good condition

These are the larger ones.  I don’t have any particular brand I like.  These will hold larger chunks of hair though.  So for the Chignon, use these.  They are bigger, thicker and stronger, so even Walmart ones will work for these.

And last but not least, my hairspray.  To be honest, hairspray isn’t a big deal.  Use the cheap stuff if you can.  I loved the purple Auzzi stuff, but I break out with EVERYTHING!  And I found the Kenra didn’t make me break out.  It is awesome hairspray though.  The best there is.  Not really necessary though.  If you ever break out along your hair line, wear your bangs are and on your jaw line where your hair touches your face, change a product.  Are you using something new?  It could be your hair products.  Happens to me all the time!

Well folks.  I know it sounds like a lot.  And… it probably is.  Most of these items, actually all of them but the shampoo and conditioner I buy maybe once a year.  They last forever.  So it sounds expensive, but it’s just that first initial buy.  After that you run out of the products at different times and it’s twenty bucks every so often.  My hair is so healthy and strong though, and it’s because of these babies.  And because I don’t wash it much!  Be nice to your hair though!

Anyway, hope this helps!!  Love ya!

  1. Hello! I just found this post and am wondering if there is any update to the shine shield you used to use?? I’m not sure if that one is made anymore…thank you!

  2. Love your site! Question: do you bow dry your hair after each wash? My dilemma is this: if I don’t blow it dry, it dries all bendy and kinky, if I DO blow it dry, I look like a frizz ball, so I have to straighten it either way so it lays nice. It’s not naturally curly but does have a little “bend” to it, and is thick. PLEASE help! Any suggestions/tips/products??

  3. New reader. Love your blog!!! I love to read blogs, but I have to say this one is great!! Keep it up please.

From a clueless about hair reader who is trying to learn…

  4. I love the batiste tropical scent. You cannot find it at the sallys in my town, so I buy it on amazon by the 6pack! It smells so much better than the original. I also really like the got to be varieties, even though sometimes the aerosol leaks and the bottle is useless after one use. The expensive varieties are not nearly as good as these two which are like $6 a piece. Batiste also makes a brunette variety but the smell is a little stronger than the tropical.

  5. I know you have mentioned dry shampoo…but I am having a hard time finding a good one. Any suggestions? Also, have you ever used Perfect 10 leave in conditioner with keratin? If so, do you still like anti-snap better? Thanks so much for all of your help!!!! You’re blog has been amazing!

  6. So I am a college student and unless it is the weekend, I rarely ever feel like fixing my hair. But, I of course want to have great looking hair every day! And I am currently attempting to grow my hair out and this blog is so helpful!! Right now I have really healthy hair, and like you, I try really hard to baby my hair. But, I feel like unless I get up and shower every morning and wash my hair, it looks flat, dull, and it is really hard to fix. I feel like I need to start over every single day. My hair doesn’t really get that greasy anyways so I am not worried about that. But do you have any tips on how to keep my blow out looking nice, or keeping cowlicks under control? ( I have several!) Also my hair has a really nice wave/big curl to it, but unless it is wet or damp it is really hard to get it to look nice. Any suggestions?

  7. So I’ve been “training” my hair for about a month (or so??) now. I used to wash every other day (day 2 was greasy and nasty and always Ponytail Day). I now wash every 3-4 days and my hair is SO much healthier, and not nearly so greasy.

I have to say though, dry Shampoo has been a life-saver (I have dark hair so baby powder doesn’t cut it for me). The first dry shampoo I used was the Batiste (sp?) from Sally’s and it was ok. But $7 a can and it went fast (I have SUPER thick hair). So I tried the cheaper ($3/can) Suave Professionals from Walmart and it is AWESOME! Smells so much better than Batiste and works even better! It even adds a little volume at the roots without yucky buildup. Love it! Just thought I’d share a little knowledge for the other brunette beauties!

Thanks so much for the hair enlightenment! Love your blog!

  8. I am a hairstylist, and I have enjoyed reading your blog. I am always looking for new styles because I too get stuck in the same rut! I couldn’t agree more on your advice for taking care of your hair! And the Kenra 25 is the only hairspray I will use!! Seriously LOVE that stuff!! Love reading your blog too!

  9. I dry my hair and then put about a dime size in my hair. I rub my hands together and put it all throughout my hair but concentrate on the ends. Try not to get in on your roots- it will make your hair look greasy!

  10. I just found your blog yesterday, and your styles are very inspiring!! However my hair is SO very thin there just doesn’t seem to be enough of it to do any of these things with. 🙁 What are your suggestions? I also purchase the Hana shield today to see if that will help it grow and be more healthy, but I was curious when and how you use it exactly. Do I want to use it in wet hair to protect from the heat of the hair dryer? Do you put it just on the roots or all the hair. Thanks for any help!! 🙂

  11. Wanted to get the anti snap, but there are 2 kinds on amazon one says it’s proteins and one says it is a leave in conditioner, one is more expensive than the other but it sounded like they accomplished the same thing, just wondering which one you use. I am glad I found your blog off of I am momma hear me roar. Your tutorial videos are very helpful, I bought an e book that had some great styles but no videos, I hope your e book will include the videos, I tried doing the waterfall on myself but no luck yet, will watch a few more times and practice! Thanks for all the tips!

  12. Becky, I have always used just a cheap WalMart one! I’ve been asked to review a really nice one though from Misikko, so I’ll try it out and let you know! It’s $200 though so unless it blows out magical fairy dust I’m sure the cheap ones from Walmart are still fine!!! And Stacy, I use just a normal brush. If you go to the straight video you can see me using it! And I get a teaser from Sally’s.. it should be in the video too!

  13. Just curious what type of hair dryer you use? Do you think the type/brand of hair dryer makes a difference to the health of your hair? By the way, thanks for all this information. Your hair is gorgeous, so I’ll be taking your advice!

  14. So here’s the deal. I just let it get frizzy. Then when I get out of the shower, I blow it so it’s completely dry and then I use the hanna shield. But my mom has a… what are they called, shower cap? A nice sturdy one. One you wouldn’t throw away. Anyway, that worked AMAZINGLY well. So, totally up to you! That’s just what I do!!

  15. I agree with Sara’s question! =) Is it all about picking a style that would look good with frizzy, messy hair the day after a shower?

Thanks for the bobby pin update! I’m on my way to Sally’s tonight! =)

  16. So, after reading this, I’m considering washing less. BUT my question to you is – when you shower without washing it, do you still wet your hair? Or do you pull it up (how do you keep it from getting wet) and do you still have to style it after you get out? It seems to me that if I shower without wetting my hair, it would frizz from the humidity…?
    Help! 🙂

  17. Okay, I stumbled across your blog yesterday and still can’t believe you only wash your hair every 3-4 days. What you say about NOT washing it everyday makes sense though so I a going to attempt to “train” my hair. I am going to start with every other day…infact, this morning I pinned my hair up into a messy french twist…wish me luck! 😉

  18. That’s a great idea!! I should probably do the same thing, so that I remember!!! Put them in a cheap little photo album you can buy at Walmart!

  19. I only wash my hair once a week or so too. I ONLY wash it when it starts to get oily or my head itches.

I have noticed for about a year now it takes longer and longer. It used to be every 3 days, then 4, then five and now a week.

I don’t die my hair or use much hair products either…just some hair creme stuff after when I do wash it and the occasional hair spray.

After reading your blog, that might change lol!! I’m thinking about printing out all your tutorials to have on hand!

  20. Don’t you love it though!? It’s AMAZING!!! And it really is all about the products. Start using even just the hanna shield and in a few months your hair will start feeling much healthier, it’s magical!

  21. I have that straightener too and LOVE it so so much. Thank you for sharing My hair is so damaged….that is why it is so short. So I better start using this stuff so I can have long beautiful hair like you one day
